A man has been arrested after driving his car into the headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch.

If you are unfamiliar with Chabad-Lubavitch, it is a major branch of Orthodox Hasidic Judaism.

A video of the car driving into the headquarters was uploaded onto X.

The Hill provided further context of the incident:

A man is in custody after driving his car Wednesday night into the world headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in New York.

New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Wednesday at a press conference that officers observed a vehicle strike the rear door of the building, located in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, at roughly 8:46 p.m. EST. Tisch added that the car then reversed and struck the rear door a second time.

Video of the incident shared to social platform X by Motti Seligson, director of media at Chabad, shows a dark-colored car driving into the building, then backing up slowly.

Chabad, an Orthodox Jewish movement, is the largest and fastest growing Jewish organization in the world, with 3,500 institutions in 100 countries and territories, according to its website.

Tisch added that no injuries resulted from the crash, and no explosives were found in the car. The incident is being investigated as a hate crime and the NYPD has “significantly increased” its presence around houses of worship throughout the city, she said.

News Nation provided details on how NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani reacted to the driver’s actions:

A spokesperson for Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he arrived at the scene before 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

In a statement posted to social media, Mamdani said he was “relieved no one was injured in this horrifying incident.”

“This is deeply alarming, especially given the deep meaning and history of the institution to so many in New York and around the world. Any threat to a Jewish institution or place of worship must be taken seriously. Antisemitism has no place in our city, and violence or intimidation against Jewish New Yorkers is unacceptable,” Mamdani added.

Attorney General Letitia James also commented on the incident, saying, “Antisemitism and hate of any kind cannot go unchecked in any corner of our city and state.”
