Just weeks before taking office, BuzzFeed published a dossier from Christopher Steele, a former MI6 spy, alleging a whole host of connections between Donald Trump and the Kremlin. The memo was known to be “salacious and unverified” by the FBI, but we'd never know that by their actions.
As we'd later learn, that very dossier was used by the Bureau to justify applying for a surveillance warrant to spy on Trump campaign associate Carter Page. We'd also learn that two FBI employees, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page (no relation to Carter) texted back and forth about an “insurance policy” in the event of a Trump victory.
Could that spying be the “insurance policy”?
It's a possibility and one that would've never been possible without Steele's dossier. Steele's dossier was funded by the opposition research firm Fusion GPS, which was paid by Hillary Clinton's campaign. It's thus the actions of Hillary (and her campaign) that are responsible for this whole mess.
Could consequences finally be coming her way? According to a report from the Washington Free Beacon:
A delegation of Republican members of Congress led by Rep. Lee Zeldin (N.Y.) are pressuring the DOJ to appoint a second special counsel to investigate why the FBI dropped its investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server, as well as further information that her supporters in the FBI may have targeted Trump in an effort to undermine his candidacy.
Zeldin said the disappearance of the probe into Clinton, as well as the disclosure that FBI and DOJ officials handling the Trump probe had ties Clinton, warrants the appointment of a new special counsel that could investigate the entire situation without bias.
“We know that at the highest levels of the DOJ and FBI there was an anti-Trump bias that existed,” Zeldin said, referring to multiple reports that senior FBI and DOJ officials communicated their loyalty to Clinton. “There were relationships that existed with Hillary Clinton. The process was not followed anywhere near where it should have been followed.”
Jeff Sessions appointed federal prosecutor John Huber to look into possible FBI/DOJ corruption, but Zeldin doesn't believe that's enough, as do other critics.
