This just in: the Senate has just advanced a whopping $9 billion DOGE cuts package.
It passed very narrowly — 51-50 — with Vice President JD Vance breaking the tie.
Check it out:
This particular bill is a rescissions package, which means it only needs a majority vote to pass as opposed to the typical 60 votes.BREAKING: VP JD Vance breaks tie vote, advancing $9B DOGE cuts package.![]()

The package majorly cuts funding to NPR and PBS by around $8 billion. The other $1 billion would be cut from USAID foreign aid.
ABC News reported:
Three Republicans voted against advancing the package. The package, which narrowly passed the House in May, would cull back funding from Public Broadcasting Service and National Public Radio, and would also formalize many of the cuts to U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), a foreign aid arm of the government that was heavily targeted by DOGE earlier this year.
Unlike many bills in the Senate, Republicans can pass the package with a simple majority of votes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on Monday that he “hopes” to hold two procedural votes on Tuesday that would advance the White House’s rescissions package and then move forward with an amendment process to shore up GOP support for the bill ahead of its final vote.
Those were:
- Susan Collins
- Lisa Murkowski
- Mitch McConnell
Why on earth are several Republicans not voting to advance some very sensible and needed DOGE cuts?Meet the three Republican senators that voted no on President Trump’s DOGE rescissions package which includes $9 billion in cuts to USAID, NPR and PBS@SenatorCollins @SenMcConnell @lisamurkowski pic.twitter.com/n4Oml4up1I![]()

McConnell is (thankfully) retiring, but these other two needed to be primaried — stat!
The Washington Examiner had this to say about why Collins voted ‘no’:I cannot get over the fact that the current Senate GOP were unable to pass Trump’s DOGE cuts without calling JD Vance down to the Senate.
Can we all just take a minute to realize how insane that is?!
This should have passed with 100% yes votes, it’s wild it did not.

President Trump wants the package on his desk by this Friday. In a statement after the vote, Collins said her opposition stemmed from a lack of clarity on all of the programs that would be included in the foreign aid cuts. She also did not want to strip local public TV and radio stations of funding.
“The rescissions package has a big problem; nobody really knows what program reductions are in it,” Collins said. “That isn’t because we haven’t had time to review the bill. Instead, the problem is that [White House Office of Management and Budget] has never provided the details that would normally be part of this process.”
Now, the first procedural hurdle has been cleared. The Senate now moves on to debating before reviewing amendments to the bill.

- This will be the Senate’s fourth vote-a-rama this year — matching the record set in 1995.
- The Senate will then vote on final passage, potentially on Thursday, depending on how long the vote-a-rama drags on.
- That would leave the House little time to take a final vote on the measure in time for Trump to sign it into law by the Friday deadline.
