This just in: the Senate has officially passed a funding package that would re-open the government.
The final vote was 60-40, with eight Democrats voting in favor of the bill and one Republican voting against it.
In case you’re curious, the eight Democrats who broke ranks to re-open the government were:
- Catherine Cortez Masto
- Dick Durbin
- John Fetterman
- Maggie Hassan
- Tim Kaine
- Mark Kelly
- Jeanne Shaheen
- Angus King
But, the government shutdown isn’t quite over yet.
Now, the bill heads to the House for final approval.

Is this an ideal situation? The Senate approved the funding package in a 60-to-40 vote, with eight members of the Democratic caucus joining all but one Republican in favor of the bill that would end the government shutdown.
The vote came on Day 41 of the impasse, after a deal was reached a day earlier and eight Democrats broke with their party to advance the measure through a key procedural hurdle.
The bill now goes to the House for approval. The lower chamber, which hasn’t voted since Sept. 19, is expected to reconvene as soon as Wednesday.
Not quite.
While Republicans held the line and Democrats eventually caved in without getting the Obamacare subsidies extension they wanted so desperately, it would have been much better to see the GOP nuke the filibuster in order to get President Trump’s agenda passed swiftly.
But, it’s not the worst result.
Especially seeing how badly this whole thing — which will go down in history as the “Schumer Shutdown” has tainted Chuck’s reputation.
By the way, President Trump has given his approval of the CR bill which the Senate passed tonight.
As long as it passes in the House, then he is expected to sign it and get the government re-opened as quickly as possible.

The bill must now go to the House for approval before it is sent to President Donald Trump’s desk to be signed.
• President’s reaction: Trump earlier said he supported the Senate funding deal to reopen the government in exchange for a future vote on extending enhanced Affordable Care subsidies.
• Ongoing shutdown impacts: Several airlines preemptively canceled flights tomorrow as part of the administration’s directive for reduced operations due to staffing shortages. Meanwhile, an appeals court rejected the administration’s effort to block fully paying food stamp benefits in November, but many recipients are still in limbo.
