Joe Biden on Tuesday evening attended a ceremony at Syracuse University where he was presented a portrait of himself.

However, during the unveiling of the portrait Biden caught backlash after calling one of Syracuse’s black board members “Barack.”

Fox News broke down Biden’s latest public appearance:

Former President Joe Biden raised eyebrows Tuesday at Syracuse University after making an awkward onstage remark comparing a Black member of the school’s Board of Trustees to former President Barack Obama.

Biden returned to his alma mater Tuesday to celebrate the unveiling of his portrait, which will be permanently displayed in the law school’s Law Library Reading Room.

Video shows Biden speaking at the podium, addressing the law school’s leadership by name before making the awkward joke.

“I always want to turn around to one guy and say.. ‘Barack what are you doing?” Biden said as the audience laughed.

He then motioned for the man off camera to join him on stage. The man is Jeffrey M. Scruggs, chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees.

“I feel like he should be standing on the right and I should be standing on the left,” Biden said as Scruggs and the audience laughed.

Commentators on social media debated the moment, with critics remarking that Biden, a well-known gaffe machine, was showing his age. Others defended the president, saying it was clearly a joke.

Even though his alma mater presented Biden a portrait Local Syr reported Biden wasn’t that great of a student during his time at Syracuse:

In his remarks just before the portrait’s unveiling, Lau called the painting “a timeless tribute to a life defined by service.”

Biden had not always been a golden student, though. In a faculty report dated to December 1965, Syracuse law professors argued that he ought to have failed a course in his freshman year for plagiarizing a Fordham Law Review article for a paper.

Biden eventually admitted to the plagiarism in 1987, in the middle of a campaign for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination, and blamed himself for misunderstanding how to cite a source. He then released his school records, which showed that he had ranked 76th in his graduating class of 85.

Biden married his first wife, Neilia Hunter, in 1966, while they were both students at Syracuse University. They had three children: Beau, Hunter, and Amy. Neilia and Amy died in a car crash in 1972.
