Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday he's going to name a community in the contested Golan Heights region after President Donald Trump.

The new community would be called Kiryat Trump — or Trump Town in English, as The New York Post and other outlets reported.

Israel — which defeated Syria in 1967 in the Six-Day War — captured the Golan Heights. And since that time, major world leaders had not recognized the area.

In March of this year, Trump became the first U.S. president to declare that Middle Eastern land as Israeli.

“All Israelis were deeply moved when President Trump made his historic decision to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” Netanyahu said in a statement on Tuesday on his YouTube page.

“I intend to bring to the government a resolution calling for a new community on the Golan Heights named after President Donald J. Trump,” Netanyahu also said.

Trump chose to recognize the land after “aggressive acts by Iran and terrorist groups, including Hezbollah, in southern Syria continue to make the Golan Heights a potential launching ground for attacks on Israel,” according to a statement.

But Syrian forces condemned that decision by Trump, as Fox News noted.

The Syrians said in a statement, “The decision … makes the United States the main enemy of the Arabs.”

President Trump's most recent effort to defend Israel against foreign [entities], taking place earlier this month, included the designation of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group. Iran is currently the greatest military threat to Israel.

Netanyahu was re-elected as prime minister for a fourth term in the days following Trump's designation.

He tweeted out his gratitude for President Trump's continued support in securing him the position.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu thanked President Trump for the tremendous support in Israel, including the recognition of Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, as well as for his steadfast stand against the Iran regime, which includes the president's decision yesterday against Iran's Revolutionary Guards,” Netanyahu tweeted.

In 2017, Israel Katz, the country's transportation minister, shared plans to name a train station leading to the West Wall after Trump.

“The Western Wall is the holiest place for the Jewish people, and I decided to call the train station that leads to it after President Trump, following his historic and brave decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel,” he said at the time, as The Jerusalem Post reported.

Trump, in May 2017, was the first sitting U.S. president to visit the holy Western Wall site. He chose to visit the site on his own — unaccompanied by any Israeli government officials — presumably so that it would not be a political statement but a religious moment.

And in May of 2018, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barket announced his intention to name a public square near the U.S. embassy site the “United States Square in honor of President Donald Trump,” as The Jerusalem Post also reported at the time.

“This is the way in which Jerusalem returns love to the president and residents of the United States who stand by the state of Israel,” Barket said in an official event.
